Overall thought of the Wiki Assignment

I thought this assignment was diffrent than normal writing assignments. Wikipedia is a very hard site to figure out and edit. I agree with beth that Wikipedia is not a user friendly program. Hopefully this research paper will be a little more self-explanitory, I bet it will!

Nursing as a Profession Stub

Nursing is a medical profession that focuses on assisting people to obtain and maintain optimal health throughout life. Nursing has always been perceived as a women’s profession, however, their has always been a few select men, and that number keeps rising as history continues. The original nurses were said to be nuns, but the term nursing as a profession wasn’t coined until the mid-nineteenth century by Florence Nightingale. Her work first started out during the Crimean War to improve the soldiers’ health conditions. Nightingale later wrote “Notes on Nursing. “ That summarizes the foundations of the, at that time new profession of nursing. Yale is said to be the first nursing school in the United States, which was founded in 1923. Because of Nightingale’s contributions in 1873 Linda Richards became the first trained nurse in the United States. Later, in the early twentieth century the Nurses Registration Act was passed and Ellen Dougherty became the first registered nurse in the United States.
Nursing is defined as the caring relationship between nurse and patient. Their ultimate purpose is to help improve, maintain, or recover health problems and to provide the best life possible for their patients. Nurses are most commonly associated with hospitals, schools, and homes. There are five most commonly know forms of nursing. First is Psychiatric nursing, which is the type of nursing that assists people with mental health disorders. Second is learning disability nursing, which is most commonly seen in schools and help in assisting people with learning developmental disabilities. Third is Pediatric nursing, which is the nursing of infant children. Fourth is Geriatric nursing, which is most commonly seen in nursing homes and is an aid to the elderly. Last is the home health nurse, which assists people in their homes.
When Florence Nightingale set the stage for nursing she designed it to be a primarily science and mathematical focused education. The first step to a career as a nurse is to obtain a high school diploma or equivalent. Attending and completing at a college or university is the second step in the education process. Most commonly a bachelor’s degree is obtained in the nursing field and is then followed by a rigorous Registered Nurses’ (RN) exam. Many acts have been passed to ensure nurses are licensed, certified, and ready to bring the ultimate service to the public. A prospective student in the nursing field essentially should be eager to learn and be able to adapt to constant change.

House of Cards Article Summary

The stock market has experienced its largest drop since the September eleventh attacks due to the fact that subprime mortgage markets with poor credit ratings are spreading. Because of lower interest rates mortgage payments are becoming easier to pay, even though the overall housing costs are rising. “Interest rates were slashed by the Federal Reserve in 2001.” It is now easier than ever for low income families to afford homes. They are taking out loans half or more of their annual income and are not able to pay them back, most of these mortgage loans are predicted to end in foreclosure. Now “forty percent” of home owners are considered “risky” consumers, and they are the reason for the increased prices in homes. Finally, actions are being taken and it is now harder to receive a “risky” loan. “Therefore closing rates are increasing, and home prices are lowering.” The bottom line is the Federal Reserve mad a mistake in cutting interest rates and now the only way to keep housing prices down is for people not to take out loans that they cannot afford.

Displaced Meaning Article Summary

The article "The Evocative Power of Things:Consumer Goods and the Preservation of Hopes and Ideas" argues cultures use products as objects or targets of displaced meaning. Displaced meaning is "the cultural meaning that has deliberately been removed from the daily life of a community and relocated in a distant cultural doman."
  • Our idealism weakens when faced with idealism of reality.
  • Cultures like to place meaning in the past or in the future or in other cultures where they place their ideals. Displaced meaning has to find its proper and functional locations, as well as time.
  • Some societies displace meaning with idividuals. It's how some groups deal with times of turmoil, like in racisim displaced mean is used as hope that times will get better.
  • Physical objects aid in the recovery of displaced meaning in society. Objects tend to be just "out of reach" for the consumer, even before buying brings persons closer to displaced meaning of lifestyle. Individuals react if they obtain the object where they have displaced their meaning. Objects are avalible with out risking contridiction.
  • Industy have exploited this meaning. We buy into bridges because we are so used to steps. We are never satisfied with the marginal. Advertisers insit their products will supply our ideas; all of this is vital for a sound economy.
  • Connections between consumer goods and consumer society helps us build hope. When we get what we are wanting it will be the solution. In order for this to work, we must never get what we want which requires "constant expansion of our wants."
  • We must keep learning new things so we keep striving for higher goals and ambitions.
